The hidden factors that contribute to Autism. Learn the facts and how to reduce the likelihood in your children.

Studies: Environment toxins can cause Autism

Leading health authority, Dr. Joe Mercola, writes, “Three decades ago, when I was still in medical school, autism affected one in 10,000 children. What changed between then and now to cause one in 50 children to become autistic?”

Research is pointing to “excessive exposure to toxins from multiple sources…” One study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found an average of 287 toxins in newborn blood. Of these, 180 are known to cause cancer in humans or animals. 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system.

“Autism appears to be strongly correlated,” and “this gives an indicator of environment load,” as Dr. Mercola quotes a University of Chicago study by Andrey Rzhetsky, Ph.D., professor of genetic medicine and human genetics. Another report from the Harvard School of Public Health and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai identified common chemicals known to disrupt brain development and cause brain damage. The authors call for the implementation of urgent preventive strategies.

Other Environmental Factors That Likely Contribute to Autism

“Besides overexposure to the environmental toxins already mentioned,” writes Mercola, “I believe there’s a variety of other important factors that also contribute to the rise in autism spectrum disorder, including but not limited to the following:

  • Gut dysbiosis, especially in combination with vaccines and their additives like mercury (thimerosal), aluminum, and others, which are known to damage your mitochondria—the powerhouses in your body’s cells that produce energy. Your gastrointestinal system is often referred to as your “second brain…”
  • Vitamin D deficiency. The link between vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women and the proportionate jump in autism has been highlighted by Dr. John Cannell. Vitamin D receptors appear in a wide variety of brain tissue early in the fetal development, and activated vitamin D receptors increase nerve growth in your brain. I believe vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy is a MAJOR contributing factor to autism…
  • Electromagnetic radiation (EMR / EMF) from cell phones, cell towers, Wi-Fi devices, which can trap heavy metals inside of nerve cells, accelerate heavy metal toxicity, and hinder natural detoxification processes.
  • Microbial toxins, such as mold. Children with autism not only have overwhelmed detoxification pathways and often heavy metal toxicity, but, according to Dr. Klinghardt, their bodies are also frequently beset by toxic microbes.

How to limit your chemical exposure and improve your resistance

In addition to eating more organic and biodynamic foods in general and consuming foods known for their preventive properties (as described by Dr. Mercola here), be sure to limit your exposure to harmful electromagnetic frequencies (EMF).

Ten tips to reduce your EMF exposure:

      1. Electrical equipment and electronics: Increase your distance from power cords, electrical equipment and electronic devices. 1 meter distance is best. Don’t forget the distance of your feet from power bars. Sit back from your computer.
      2. WiFi: Use ethernet as much as possible instead of wireless. Turn off WiFi when not in use. You can either unplug it or simply access the wireless router’s console from your browser to turn it off (and on when needed). Did you know your Macbook Air can be fitted with an Ethernet Adapter? (about $20)
      3. Cell Phones: Come up with a “cell phone off strategy” that works for your personal lifestyle. Even if you decide to have your phone in airplane mode 50% of the time, that’s 50% better. Make sure WiFi is off as well. Text instead of talk. Use the speaker phone when talking. Some headphones reduce electromagnetic radiation, but you’ll need to test them with an EMF meter. Don’t hold the phone to your head. Don’t keep the phone on your belt or in in a pocket.
      4. Cordless Phones: Throw them away. Replace with corded landlines. The new DECT phones emit high levels of constant microwave radiation, even when not being used.
      5. Home or Office Wiring: There is high frequency pollution in your electrical wiring. It needs to be dramatically reduced. The best way to do this is to have STETZERiSER filters installed in your home (an average of 2 per room). We can do this for you. Note: do not sleep or work near your building’s electrical panel. Keep at least 3 meters away.
      6. Smart Meters: Ask your utility to have your wireless smart meter wired or replaced with a wired model. If unsuccessful, have us install a smart meter shield set and a set of STETZERiSER filters*. Don’t sleep in a room near the location of the smart meter.
      7. Bedroom Sleeping Practices: Make sure sleeping quarters are EMF-clean. Follow the steps above that relate to electrical and electronic equipment, WiFi, phones, etc. And be sure to move your clock radio at least 1 meter from your head, and preferably across the room. Don’t use wireless Baby Monitors. Replace your metal lamp with wood or ceramic or unplug the lamp and move it away from your body. Consider turning off the power to your bedroom at the electrical panel for a better night’s sleep. More on how to get a good night’s sleep.
      8. Workspace Practices: Follow the applicable tips above and work with fluorescent tube lighting turned off. Remove CFL (compact fluorescent bulbs) from your workspace. Use LED lights (the type that don’t use transformers) incandescent light bulbs where possible. Suggestion: Have one of our EMF technicians come to your workplace (or home) and test the EMF levels. You won’t know until you have the electrical, magnetic and high frequency readings measured and interpreted for you. You should have values less than 1 milliGauss for magnetic fields;  5 V/m for power frequency electric fields; 40 – 50 GS units for dirty electricity; 0.01 microW/cm2 for wireless radiation; 0.5 V for ground current at 60 Hz; and 10 mV for kHz ground current.
      9. Consider Shielding: There are a lot of EMF mitigation techniques available, but some sources of harmful electromagnetic radiation simply can’t be avoided or removed. That’s where shielding comes in. Two of the best products we’ve come across are the ADR-TEX Universal Electro-screen and the ADR-Mat . They are superior products with significant international recognition and awards. Contact us for more information, or if you’re ready  to buy, use the coupon code: 5%emf when you make your purchase at ADR.
      10. Power Lines: What is a safe distance from power lines? Have us come and measure the magnetic and electrical readings from the power lines near your home or office. In research carried out at Oxford University, it was discovered that children who had lived within 200 m of high voltage lines at birth had a 70% higher risk of leukaemia than those 600 m or more away.  More about power lines here.

A General Health Tip: Keep fit and eat well. Exercise, get fresh air, eat fresh organic foods, take plant-based supplements because most of us don’t get enough nutrients for optimal health in our modern diet. And learn to have a relaxed attitude. You’ll live a healthier life and your body will be better equipped to cope with EMF exposure!

* GS filters are tuned capacitors that reduce high frequency voltages (transients) on electrical wires. They protect sensitive electronic equipment. Studies show they also reduce symptoms of electro-hypersensitivity. GS filters should be installed with proper monitoring (microsurge meter) to ensure levels are sufficiently low for maximum benefit.

Sleeping issues? Good advice and ten tips for battling sleep deprivation

Get a good night’s sleep with these 10 tips

sleepAdvice and Tips for a Good Sleep

Are you a bit grumpy or anxious in the morning? Do you have trouble focusing on tasks?

You may be sleep deprived. Some clues could be as simple as:

  • difficulty waking up in the morning
  • difficulties concentrating
  • trouble remembering things
  • irritability and moodiness
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • headaches

A lack of sleep can prevent your body from repairing itself by restricting your cells’ ability to produce protein, which is needed for the process of repairing ultraviolet light damage, and for growth of cells. Sleep deprivation also slows the body’s normal flow of hormones during sleep. These hormones are natural regulators of energy, growth, metabolic and endocrine functions.

Most people need 7 to 8 hours of sleep; however the aging adult tends to need less. You’ll recognize the signs of a good night’s sleep: you should wake up feeling rested and you should not have too many of the symptoms listed above.

Ten Tips for Battling Sleep Deprivation

  1. Try to do without naps (can interfere with the body’s clock).
  2. Keep to a regular bedtime.
  3. Practice bedtime routines (perform calming habits before bedtime; for example, taking a warm bath, listening to calming music, doing devotions or affirmations, etc). Your mind will connect these with a good sleep.
  4. Get up and reset if you can’t fall asleep in 15 to 20 minutes (rather than tossing & turning, go to another room and do something relaxing such as reading, but avoid bright lights and TV).
  5. Move your clock radio at least 1 or 2 meters from your head. It’s EMF emissions can affect your natural sleep patterns. And ensure the clock face is not visible to you during the night.
  6. Turn off your cell phone and wifi at night (they produce powerful electromagnetic waves that interfere with your brain.
  7. Get plenty of sunshine, fresh air, and exercise during the day. Each of these are proven to improve your success in falling asleep.
  8. Avoid alcohol and caffeine for several hours before going to bed. (Some people need 12 hours of no caffeine, believe it not! And alcohol will initially help you fall asleep but it will cause you to wake up a few hours into the night).
  9. Don’t smoke (nicotine is a stimulant).
  10. Avoid eating at least 3 hours before bed.

10 tips for EMF protection. How we can protect ourselves from harmful electromagnetic radiation.

How to lower your exposure to EMF

We are exposed to such a wide variety of electromagnetic pollution (electrosmog) these days, it’s just about impossible to avoid it. A lot of us are wondering how to do this most effectively and what are the worst offenders.

emf_protection_umbrella

Ten tips to reduce your exposure:

      1. Electrical equipment and electronics: Add some distance between yourself and power cords, electrical equipment and electronic devices. 1 meter distance is best. Don’t forget the distance of your feet from power bars. Sit back from your computer. Unplug your computer at night if it’s in your bedroom.
      2. WiFi: Instead of WiFi, use ethernet as much as possible. Turn off WiFi when not in use. You can either unplug it or simply access the wireless router’s console from your browser to turn it off (and on when needed). The usual IP address for your router’s console is 192.168.2.1 and in the case of the Bell 2Wire modem, the address is sometimes gateway.2wire.net . Get used to “wired” Internet access, and use Wi-Fi sparingly. Even a Macbook Air can be fitted with an Ethernet Adapter (about $20).
      3. Cell Phones: Come up with a “cell phone off strategy” that works for your personal and professional lifestyle. Many of us can’t keep them off all the time. Dr. Mercola has information for you about harmful EMF radiation

Dr. Mercola on Electro Magnetic Fields (EMF) and which of them can be hazardous to our health.Dr. Mercola on EMF. A worthwhile read. (Abridged)

Do electromagnetic fields (EMF) from power lines, home wiring, computers and appliances cause anything from brain tumours and leukemia, to cancer & other health problems?

A growing list of experts are convinced that the threat is real.

  • Dr. David Carpenter, Dean at the School of Public Health, State University of New York: “up to 30% of all childhood cancers come from exposure to EMFs.”
  • The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): “There is reason for concern,” advising “prudent avoidance”.
  • Martin Halper, EPA Director of Analysis and Support: “I have never seen a set of epidemiological studies that remotely approached the weight of evidence that we’re seeing with EMFs. Clearly there is something here.”
  • Paul Brodeur in the New Yorker Magazine, June 1989, and Time Magazine 1990: these articles had a catalytic effect on scientists, reporters and concerned people throughout the world.
  • US Department of Energy (November 1989): “It has now become generally accepted that there are, indeed, biological effects due to field exposure.”

Concerns about our Homes

In addition to the long-term health concerns, buying a house with high fields will be an economic disaster. In a few years, when power line radiation is as well known as asbestos and radon, a house with high fields will be practically impossible to sell. Already there are hundreds of lawsuits regarding EMFs and property devaluation.

Power Lines

All power lines radiate electromagnetic fields. The question is: how much are the power lines near YOUR home radiating? Editor’s NOTE: our own measurements of high voltage power lines and then comparing them to safety charts have revealed facts we’d like to share with you.   Email Us.

Transformers

A key component of a utility’s electrical distribution network depends upon numerous, small transformers mounted on power poles. A transformer looks like a small metal trash can, usually cylindrical… Many people don’t realize that when they see a transformer, the power line feeding the transformer is 4000 to 13,800 volts.

The transformer then reduces the voltage to the 120/240 volts needed by nearby homes. Since these transformers can be seen in almost every neighborhood, they are a source of concern.

Home Wiring

If your home has high EMF readings, it is important to determine the sources of the EMF so that remedial action can be taken …

Computers

The Swedish safety standard, effective 711/90, specifies a maximum of 0.25 mG at 50 cm from the display. Many US manufactured computers have EMFs of 5 – 100 mG at this distance. And know this too: the screens placed over monitors do NOT block EMFs. Not even a lead screen will block ELF and VLF magnetic fields.

Electric Clocks

Electric clocks have a very high magnetic field, as much as 5 to 10 mG up to three feet away…

Fluorescent Lights

Fluorescent lights produce much more EMFs than incandescent bulbs…

Microwave Ovens and Radar

Microwave ovens and radar from military installations and airports emit two types of radiation — microwave and ELF. Microwaves are measured in milliwatt per centimeter squared (mW/cm2) As of 1/1/93, the U.S. safety limit for microwave exposure is 1 mW/cm2, down from a previous 10 mW/cm2. The Russian safety limit is .01 mW/cm2. All microwave ovens leak and exceed the Russian safety limit. In addition, recent Russian studies have shown that normal microwave cooking coverts food protein molecules into carcinogenic substances.

When measuring microwaves from military and airport radar sources, 100% accurate readings can only be found with extremely expensive digital peak-hold meters…

Telephones and Answering Machines

Telephones can emit surprisingly strong EMFs, especially from the handset. This is a problem because we hold the telephone so close to our head. Measure the EMF’s from the ear piece and the mouth piece before buying a phone.

Some brands emit no measurable fields and others emit strong fields that travel several inches….right into your brain. Answering machines, particular those with adapter plugs (mini-transformers), give off high levels of EMFs.

Electric Razors and Hair Dryers

Electric razors and hair dryers emit EMFs as high as 200 to 400 mG…

Prudent Avoidance

Electricity is an inseparable part of our modern day society. This means that EMFs will continue to be all around us. But as Discover Magazine postulated, aside from making our life easier, is electricity also making our lives shorter?

Most experts agree that limited, non-chronic exposure to EMFs is not a threat. For example, it is probably acceptable for a person to be near a toaster in the morning.

BUT, it is not advisable for a person to sleep under an electric blanket, up close, live near a powerline/substation, and sleep in a room where the power enters the home. This person is under an extreme case of chronic exposure. This condition, unfortunately, applies to millions of Americans.

If you wish to follow the EPA’s advice and practice “prudent avoidance” then this advice is offered:

  • Measure your home, work and school environments
  • Don’t let your children play near power lines, transformers, radar domes and microwave towers.
  • Avoid areas where the field is above 1 mG. Measure the EMFs from appliances both when they are operating and when they are turned off. Some appliances (like TVs) are still drawing current even when they are off.
  • Don’t sleep under an electric blanket or on a waterbed. If you insist on using these, unplug them before going to bed (don’t just turn it off). Even though there is no magnetic field when they are turned off, there may still be a high electric field.
  • Don’t sit too close to your TV set. Distance yourself at least 6 feet away. Use a Gauss meter to help you decide where it is safe to sit.
  • Rearrange your office and home area so that you are not exposed to EMFs from the sides/backs of electric appliances and computers. In the home, it is best that all major electrical appliances, such as computers, TVs, refrigerators etc, be placed up against outside walls. That way you are not creating an EMF field in the adjoining room.
  • Don’t sit too close to your computer. Computer monitors vary greatly in the strength of their EMFs, so you should check yours with a meter. Don’t stand close to your microwave oven. Move all electrical appliances at least 6 feet from your bed. Eliminate wires running under your bed. Eliminate dimmers and 3-way switches.
  • Be wary of cordless appliances such as electric toothbrushes and razors. You may choose not to wear a quartz-analog watch because it radiates pulsating EMFs along your acupuncture meridians.
  • An older mechanical windup watch would be an acceptable alternative. It is also recommended to wear as little jewelry as possible and to take it off at night. Many people have metal sensitivity which can be aggravated by placing it right on the skin. Measure with a gauss meter to be sure.

And last, but not least, always always always remember that EMFs pass right through walls. The EMF you are reading on your Gauss meter could be radiating from the next room…or from outside your home.

Additional Radiation Info:

Eyeglass frames should ideally be made from plastic with no wires in them, otherwise they can serve as an antenna to focus the radio and cellular phone waves directly into your brain.

What EMF Level Is Safe?

There’s a heated debate as to what electromagnetic field (EMF) level is considered safe. Since the experts have not come to an consensus, you’ll have to decide for yourself… Many government and utility documents report the usual ambient level of 60-Hz magnetic field to be 0.5 mG.

Thus, any reading higher than 0.5 mG is above the “usual” ambient exposure. Many experts and public officials, as well as the few governments that have made an effort to offer public protection, have adopted the 3 mG cutoff point. The EPA has proposed a safety standard of 1 mG. Sweden has set a maximum safety limit of 1 mG.

Dr. Robert Becker, an MD who has been studying the effects of EMFs for 20 years, states a lmG safety limit in his book Cross Currents. When electricians try to solve a magnetic field problem they do their best to drop the level to 1 mG or below.

Dr. Nancy Wertheimer, a Ph.D. epidemiologist who has been studying EMFs for 20 years, has been looking at the epidemiological data in a different way — she is trying to associate EMF levels with health rather than disease. The level she is coming up with is a cut off of 1 mG. Russian researchers claim that 1/1000ths of a mG should be the standard.

The BioElectric Body believes that there are several stages of health between “optimum wellness”, “degenerative disease” and “Cancer”. Thus, we maintain our own living and sleeping quarters at 0.5mG and below.

Dr. Mercola recommends measuring EMFs in the home. Did you know that we can measure them for you for less than 1/4 the cost of the meters needed to do the job, and guide you through the process of reducing your health risks?

We conduct EMF home inspections in Toronto, GTA, Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Missauga.
